Construction Workers Close Access to Sandy Bay
Construction workers working at Devon Cliffs holiday park have closed off access to the beach at Sandy Bay until April.2012
The owners of the holiday park which is owned by Haven a subsidiary of Bourne Leisure Ltd have confirmed their belief that the beach access is their own private property.
A local manager said that they have no responsibility to keep the pathway open.
However, enquiries with Devon County Council have shown that there is an ongoing dispute ,regarding access to the beach, which has been running for over three years.
The Ramblers Association have claimed public access on the grounds of historic use known as unrecorded rights of access.
Local beach users have complained that the closure is putting lives at risk and encouraging walkers to use more dangerous access routes up the cliff.
There is also the chance that beach walkers from Exmouth could be cut off by the tide and unable to get off the beach safely.
Devon Cliffs have recently increased the number of barriers on the access route making it even more dangerous for determined walkers.
People who use the beach at this time of year are local dog walkers, joggers, keep fit enthusiasts, walkers, surfers, fishermen & bird watchers.
